“Thank you BBAF for all of your support these past several years – it’s made a difference to so many East Palo Alto families.” – Loree, BBAF Partner

Nana Y Yo is an early learning readiness program for a child, 0-5 years of age, and their caregiver at the East Palo Alto Y. Families in the program were invited to use the pool and parents of the younger kids, 0-3 years of age, inquired about a parent-child class specifically for them. BBAF granted funding to support this new class.

Most of the moms do not swim and were thrilled to have their young children in the water. One of the moms shared that she really appreciates the opportunity to be in the class and that she has learned water safety tips and ways to work with her son in the water. She also mentioned how important this life skill is to all of the families and is happy that she is able to translate for the other parents in the class who have limited English language skills.

BBAF helped continue the program through the summer months providing these families with educational, recreational, and social resources in two half-hour weekly classes. The social time is very important, as many of the mothers are isolated, at home with young children and no family nearby – and this opportunity helps their personal wellness.
